Q&A with Lee DuCote

  1. If you had to describe yourself using three words, it would be: funny, romantic, and adventurous.
  2. What are you currently working on? I am writing another YA novel about an 18-year-old girl that is genetically connected to a female coyote.   Sweet, fast paced, and as always a love story.
  3. What is your favorite animal?   I have a pet raccoon that now lives in the woods but he comes and sees us two-three times a week.
  4. If you were to create a slogan for your life what would it be? “Follow your imagination, it’s never ending and will never fool you.”
  5. Name one of your favorite things about someone in your family. I love the imagination of my son, Dylan.
  6. When not writing do you have a hobby? I don’t know if it’s a hobby but I am a chaplain for a college football team.
  7. Who has been your favorite character? Cap, in Across Borders.  He’s rough, tough, and a great father to the men he leads.  And he rolls his own cigarettes, a lost art form.
  8. What author would you like to have dinner with and pick their brain?  Dr. Seuss

Chapter 1

Deep within a hellish cavern, six towering beings merged from the depths of its heated core and gathered at the opening. They were beautiful creatures with physically striking features and the physiques of warriors, clothed to resemble the upper crust of the society they would soon infiltrate. Their eyes glowed with a fierce ember red against the backdrop of a darkening sky.

“It’s time we avenge our brother and bring this Council to its knees,” one of them hissed.

“Your arrogance will be the death of you, just like our brother, Luceph!” another answered with a sinister laugh.

“Levia, as the Master has told us, we must stop the boy first! Then we will have our revenge.” That line of reasoning was offered by one of the beings sitting on the ledge of a boulder at the entrance to the cavern.

“Modeus, you think you’re better than us?” Levia snapped at him.

In a calm and compelling tone, he answered, “It’s not that I’m better than you. We have a mission to see out.” He stood atop the boulder, looking down at the rest of them. “This child, who is now of age, has been delivered to abolish each one of us . . . and our Master. The first thing we must do is—”

“Kill him!” one of them interrupted.

Shooting him a deathly stare, he snapped back, “To befriend him!”

“You know he is trained to see who we really are,” Levia answered with a snarl.

“Yes, but we must only look at his friends and pick one who wants something only we can offer. Once we have chosen someone to betray him, then we will have our revenge.”

“And what can we offer this friend?”

“We simply give something back that’s been taken from them.” Modeus smiled.

“And I know the perfect person. I’ll handle it,” Levia replied. And before any of the others could respond, Levia vanished, leaving a brush of wind behind.

“He’ll be the next to die!” Modeus rolled his eyes.

Levia gathered two of his followers and descended on a small town nestled beside a tranquil lake in the Ozark Mountains, a town the six demons feared. Within this town rested the final graves that were intended for the six demons—and one grave that already held their brother.

“How appropriate that the Council chose this town for their savior to live,” one of Levia’s followers replied.

“We’ll have to pay Luceph a respectful visit before we leave,” Levia replied as the three of them walked unnoticed onto the grounds of the local high school. Invisible to the average eye, they wove their way through the busy halls of students and teachers, searching for the very person Levia wanted the most.

At the head of the pack, he held out a hand to stop his followers. “There!” He smiled and pointed to a student.

“That student doesn’t look like anyone who could help us.”

“Oh, yes, I’m sure of it. And with the right persuasion, I can make the feeling of being robbed intensify to the point of desperation.” Levia grinned and walked toward his next victim.

At the obscene beeping of an alarm clock, Micah hit the snooze button for the last time. Who in the world made the snooze time only nine minutes? he thought. He rolled out of his tangled sheets and sat up, placing his bare feet on a cold, hardwood floor.

It was unusually bright that early in the morning. Rubbing his face and opening his eyes, he could see the dust particles in the beam of sunlight shining through the mirror he had cracked while throwing a ball against the wall two weeks ago.

As he walked into his bathroom, his brown hair was a matted mess. He reached in the shower and turned on the hot water, instantly steaming up the small bathroom.

“Man, what a crazy dream. I hope today is better than yesterday, and who in the world was that redheaded girl?” he said to himself.

“Were you talking to me?” Gran asked while walking by his room.

“No, Gran,” Micah replied. Man, these old walls are too thin, he thought.

Looking into the fogged mirror, he wiped it clear with his hand, then studied the back of his shoulder, where several small scars created a larger circular scar. He had always thought they looked like teeth marks, but as he got older, he had begun to suspect other theories of how he got them—still, he couldn’t quite recall the memory.

He thought about yesterday. It’s always awkward being the new guy on the first day of school. Not that anything embarrassing happened, thankfully; actually, most kids didn’t think much about Micah as the new kid. Being a freshman is hard, but in a small town it’s even harder if you just moved in. And for Micah, he just moved in a few weeks ago, so having time to make friends before school started wasn’t viable.

Seven Springs is a quaint, small town nestled in the northern part of the Ozark Mountains. It sits on part of a tranquil blue lake that feeds into a cold river, attracting fishermen from all over the world. Being a retirement community, much of the town shuts down after 7:00 p.m., leaving the younger generations to fend for themselves for entertainment. A few fast-food joints, a small theater, and a bowling alley are about the only venues the retired town offers. Micah hadn’t adapted yet, and being from a big city where the nightlife was more active than the day, it was going to be a challenge.

He had lived in Tennessee most of his life. As an orphan, he couldn’t recall the first six years of his life but remembered vividly the day his adopted parents drove away from the orphanage with him in the backseat, gazing back at a half-dozen kids waving goodbye.

Micah’s adopted parents, Dale and Kelly Spearman, were regular entrepreneurs in the Nashville area and were quite successful for nearly a decade before the economy took a turn for the worst, especially for small business owners. After closing their business, they joined the mission field and moved to a small town in northern Greece. Micah, who had just turned fifteen, had the decision to go with them or move in with his grandparents. School was going to be hard enough with the Advanced Placement classes he had planned on taking, but starting over in a new country was out of the question. He decided it would be too much of a culture shock, especially since he was a little shy.

Being a natural at lacrosse, he was excited to play for Seven Springs High School, a three-time state champion in lacrosse, and with the lack of money in his family, lacrosse could easily pay his way to college. A dream of his was to play for a division-1 school. So with mixed emotions, he decided to stay in the States and pursue his dream of playing lacrosse in college.

Making his way into the dated kitchen, he said to Paw, “I wonder how Mom and Dad are doing moving into their new place.” Paw, Dale’s father, was a local preacher, a sturdy old man who was set in his ways but loved to spend time with teenagers and seemed to understand them.

“I’m sure they are getting along just fine. Dale has a unique way of recruiting help,” Paw replied.

“Don’t say it like he cons people into doing things, Duke,” Gran replied in a sweetly protective tone. Both Paw and Micah smiled at each other. “So what is on your agenda today after school?” Gran asked.

“I have workouts with the freshman team till four thirty, and maybe just hang out afterward,” he said with a mouthful of toast.

“Okay, just let us know where you are going to be,” Gran said.

“You better get a move on if you’re gonna be on time,” Paw said while picking up his paper.

“Oh, crap! I mean . . . well, you know.” Micah fumbled while grabbing his backpack. “I got to go. See ya.”

The high school was only a few blocks away, and Micah wondered if riding a bike would look too geeky. Other thoughts ran though his head about how hot it was, the need for a car soon, and lacrosse practice, but mostly the redheaded girl who smiled at him during lunch. He wondered who she was. There was something unique about her; it was almost like he knew her from somewhere.

A couple of guys strolled out on the sidewalk in front of him. One turned around and gave him a head nod. “What’s up?”

“Hey,” Micah greeted him back. They walked separately the rest of the way but once they got to the school property, the same guy asked Micah where he was from.

“Nashville,” he replied.

“Cool. Why did you move here?”

“My parents moved to Greece,” Micah said.

The boy stopped walking. “Hey, you’re the new lacrosse player we heard about!”

“I guess so,” Micah said with a shrug.

“I’m Tyler, and this is Jake; we play on the JV team. You ready for practice today?”

Jake was a stocky kid and bigger than most of the freshman boys Micah had seen yesterday. Tyler was tall and skinny with jet-black hair. Both boys were wearing athletic shorts with flip-flops. “Yeah, think so. Are there many guys on the team?” Micah asked.

“Maybe twenty; everyone will make the JV team but varsity cuts about half of the guys who try out. Our coach is pretty cool; sometimes he can be a jerk, but he’s cool,” Tyler replied, walking through the open back doors to the school.

“What do you have first period?” Jake asked Micah.

Micah reached in his back pocket for his class schedule. “World history with—”

“You have Mrs. Hedding; she’s senile.” Tyler laughed from inside the hallway.

“Find us at lunch. We sit near the back door in the cafeteria,” Jake said, walking to his class.

“Okay.” Thank you, God—normal guys.

Micah walked into Mrs. Hedding’s class looking for a chair, while thinking about what Tyler said about her.

“Jimmy, have a seat,” she said, glancing over her glasses at Micah.

Jimmy? A few students laughed as they overheard. News travels fast in a small town, and everyone knew Micah was the new transfer. They also all knew that Mrs. Hedding wasn’t good with names.

He sat down in front of the same blonde girl he had sat in front of yesterday and pulled his notebook out of his bag.

“Hi,” the blonde girl said.

“Hi.”

“Where did you move from?” she asked.

“Nashville.”
“Cool! What’s it like moving from a big city to our little danky town?”

“Miss Evans, please stop talking to Jimmy and get out your notebook,” Mrs. Hedding snapped. The class laughed again.

The blonde sat back in her chair and pulled out her books. “I’m Carrie,” she whispered back.

Micah overheard another girl to his left. “She’s trying to bag another guy. Can she have ‘I’m easy’ written any bigger on her forehead?” A few girls sitting nearby laughed. Micah didn’t hear a response or acknowledgment from Carrie on the comment and figured she didn’t hear them.

She seems nice, Micah thought.

I narrowed my eyes to slits because he was merely feet away from me.

Darcy Hart.

My betrayer.

“Excuse me, are you blind? I’m standing right here, and I was talking to this fella before you were,” I sneered.

Darcy leaned to the left and looked around the lad to see who was speaking to him, and when his eyes landed on mine they instantly narrowed.

“Neala Clarke.”

He always spat out my name like it left a bad taste in his mouth.

I smirked at him. “The one and only.”

A Shot of Bourbon (Bourbon Series #1)A Shot of Bourbon by A.C. Land

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

17-year-old Rich girl left alone for a week while parents are overseas anniversary trip and no one expects trouble? Well, trouble is always to be found. In this case, Charli is interested in finding why she doesn’t know her birth father and why her mom clams up at the mention. Add in the one boy mom says to stay away from no matter, an overbearing, confused, borderline abusive sometime boyfriend, and an overprotective best friend with her own issues and we have a roller coaster ride in the making. Seeing Luke and Charli become friends and overcome their differences and allowing them to learn about each other, regardless of prejudice of economic barriers and fight to save each other was worth the ride. The question is, will they both be saved or will one take the fall to prevent the other from the pain of surviving this heartache in the making?

The cliffhanger at the end isn’t atrocious either. It makes me interested in the battles to come!

When Shane Coleman and his nephew Sam move into town, it’s the biggest event to happen in as long as anyone can remember. It’s quite remarkable for anyone to move into Goshen rather than out, but when it’s discovered that Sam is 17, it requires some serious burning of the phone lines. All the teen girls are thrilled to have a new hottie in town—all except Niahm. Sam Coleman represents a threat to her perfect way of life.

Sam is drawn to Niahm against his will. He’d prefer to not be bound to this angry, stubborn, unlikeable girl. Unfortunately, he has no choice. However, Sam didn’t plan on falling for Niahm. For Immortals, love is not only forbidden, but dangerous for her. He finds himself in a fight not only for Niahm’s heart, but to protect her from being harmed by those who seek to destroy Sam and those like him.

Niahm finds herself attracted to the tall, copper-headed boy, who becomes her friend and then her support when tragedy strikes. Soon, she begins to realize that there may be more to Sam than she ever suspected… much more. But what he truly is, she can’t begin to imagine

Bennett lives a most unglamorous life in the beautiful state of Utah. She is the author of several YA books in many subgenres. She’s the mom of two daughters, two sons, two daughters-in-law, and a son-in-law not to mention her three adorable grandbabies. She loves gooey cookies, dark chocolate, and cheesy popcorn. She hates housework and cooking, and has no plans to become a domestic goddess. Her favorite pastime–other than writing–is riding her Harley.

Q & A with the Author:

1.
did you find more difficult: writing the book or marketing it?
Why?
In this case, marketing the book was more difficult. I didn’t
know a lot about marketing, so I wasn’t sure of the best way to go about that.
Marketing continues to be a struggle for most authors. The landscape of
publishing changes daily which makes the best way to market constantly in flux.
What works today could be obsolete tomorrow. So it becomes necessary to
constantly watch what others are doing and change your strategies.
2.
What is the best advice you received growing up?
My dad used to say, “apologizing after you’ve hurt someone is
like pulling a nail out of a board and expecting the hole to disappear.” What
he meant was not that you shouldn’t or can’t apologize, but that you should try
to avoid the hurt in the first place because though you can try to make it
right, it will always be there. I frequently think of that and try really hard
to not hurt others to avoid leaving a hole in their heart or soul.

Tia Silverthorne Bach has been married to her college sweetheart for twenty years, has three beautiful girls, and adores living in sunny California. Her daughters were born in Chicago, San Diego, and Baltimore; and she feels fortunate to have called many places home. She believes in fairy tales and happy endings and is an avid reader and rabid grammar hound.

She is an award-winning, multi-genre author and an Editor for Indie Books Gone Wild. From an early age, she escaped into books and believes they can be the source of healing and strength. If she’s not writing, you can find her on the tennis court, at the movies, reading a good book, or spooning Jif peanut butter right out of the jar.
Angela Beach Silverthorne I was born in West Point, Georgia, but hail Eastern North Carolina as home. Writing has always been a part of my life. As soon as I could hold a pencil, I was writing. I’m a firm believer that reading and writing go hand-in-hand. I devour books in all genres, but I love stories that focus on reality within families. I want it to be real, even if it’s messy and painful. That’s real.

In 1970, I married my teenage sweetheart, Dallas. Our family has grown from three daughters to three wonderful sons-in-law and nine grandchildren. In the large bulk of time between marriage, family and retirement, we moved ten times. I’ve worked various jobs—fifteen years with Hospice; ten with Literacy; six with Habitat for Humanity; three as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for neglected, abused and abandoned youth; and as a Director of a preschool for at-risk children. I have served with Pamlico Emmaus, taught Sunday school and written countless Bible studies. My joy is teaching seniors who actually end up teaching me. Isn’t that the way God truly intends it?

Between all the moves and a full life, I’ve always craved learning. I attended five colleges, finally graduating from the State University of New York, Albany, with an English degree. Every school I attended, I’d fall in love with a new discipline—accounting, microbiology, creative writing, Shakespearean studies, or Young Adult Literature. Each of these were tentative, a hobby.  My lifelong learning has been within the Word of God.  That’s my passion.

Like most people, life has thrown me into a lot of deep pits, health crisis, death, anger, frustration and insecurity. In each of these seasons of life, I have grown to realize that all my effort and angst did nothing to ease me through them. Only waiting on God’s timing, trusting in His plan, and working in His kingdom helped me maneuver through these hard times. Trust me, nothing prepares you more to be a comfort to others than the trials and sufferings you have been through and will experience. It gives life credibility.  It braids your life to others.  What a joy to know if we allow God to use us, he will take every struggle and heartache, and turn it into glory for Him.

Katerina
After a six-year relationship with someone who made Katerina feel less than perfect, she is ready for a fresh start. With her grandmother’s words in her mind, she begins seeking out new experiences by creating a list of adventures she’d like to complete. First on the list, a night out with friends. Which leads to the second item on her list, a one night stand. That single night with Caleb is one she can’t get out of her head. However, just when she thinks her life is moving forward, her past comes back. Making her doubt herself, her adventure list and her dreams of finding home.
Caleb
Caleb isn’t the settling down type. His life is exactly what he wants, an uncomplicated routine. He has his boys, his business, his bass and his bike. Caleb’s life motto is work hard, ride his motorcycle harder and play music the hardest. Until the night he met Katerina. Suddenly, everything he thought he wanted wasn’t enough. For the first time in his life, he was thinking about his future. His future with her.

Excerpt

Caleb puts his hand on my chin, tilts my head to the side so he exposes my neck, dropping his lips
first on my shoulders. He begins trailing light kisses up my neck. I can feel his tongue making
contact with each kiss, leaving my skin slightly dampened. When he hits each sensitive spot on
my neck, goose bumps form on my skin. The way he touches me has me wanting more. I grip his
hair tighter, pulling his lips to mine. He teases my lips with his tongue before gently biting my lip,
which causes my mouth to open. As if he’s tasting me, he grazes my tongue lightly, before
entangling it with mine. This is the sexiest kiss I ever had. Panty melting, toe curling, chills down
my spine good.

Excerpt

Caleb is in full rock mode as he plays. My body temperature shot up twenty degrees the minute I
saw him on stage. Instantly, I start taking some pictures, wanting to capture the moment. I don’t
take my eyes off him. Caleb’s well-worn denim jeans ride low on his hips, and his tight black tank
top show off his muscles and tattoo. His stance is wide and low, his hat covers his eyes, as his
head bangs to the beat. My panties get wet looking at him up on stage.
One song turns into another. Slither is amazing, and the guys are completely in their element on
stage. I watch each of them. Hunter is crazy up there playing the drums. Jeremy kicks ass on the
guitar. Bentley is everything a lead singer should be, drawing in the audience. Aly is watching
every move he makes. We are jumping to the beat, getting into it with everyone else. I’m in love
with every song they are playing. I recognize the guitar chords of Creed’s One. Only this time
Caleb walks up to the microphone. When he starts singing the first words, I bite my lip in
amazement. Holy shit, he can sing. Can this man get any hotter? His voice is sultry and raw. As I
stare in awe, he looks down and winks at me. I think my panties melted off at that point. The
thought of actually throwing them on stage crossed my mind. But I didn’t.
Aly looks at me, “You are one lucky bitch. He’s fucking hot up there.” I know, and he is mine
tonight.

I think Becca Taylor is an amazing writer! She brought the story of Kat and CaReview Bannerleb and embedded it so deep into my heart that I dreamed of a love like this. And I never have dreams like that! To have the instant connection without it feeling like an “insta-love” situation is great! Their trials and issues were heart rendering and the fact they did not do the “fight how you feel” and just went with it is a wonderful change of pace! I love how the chapters were broken up to each POV also!

About the Author

becca taylor banner

I love to read books. I can easily read a book in a matter of hours. I’ve even been known to read the same books over and over. For a short time, life got in the way and I stopped reading. I fell in love with books again after reading a well-known series. So much that I read it five times in a row.
When I started branching out of my normal genre, I found so many new Indie authors that were truly amazing.
One night after reading a book, I had a rather vivid dream. I decided to write it down. Each day I wrote a little more. Within a month, I had a completed book. Now, I’m working on a series. Starting a new adventure in my life, one that I never knew was in me.

Excerpt:

Laughter came from the stage.

The members of the band were breaking down their equipment and talking with fans. A group of women surrounded the keyboardist. One of them wore a tiara and a “Finally 21!” sash over a form-fitting, pink minidress. He draped an arm around her and posed for pictures. The redhead practically swooned. Who could blame her? Six years ago, at that age, she would have done the same. His wide shoulders were made for holding onto, and the way he filled out those jeans screamed hot body. Not to mention that orgasm-inducing grin. He turned up the wattage on said grin and chatted with his admirers. At least a ten-year age difference existed between him and the birthday girl. The way he flirted with her and her friends, maybe he preferred to date younger.

His eyes locked on Lauren. Even from a distance, she could see his gaze roaming over her from head to toe and back up again. He smiled and her short, white dress grew as warm as a parka. Caught staring, could she look more pathetic?

Steps from the exit, a drunken guy staggered into her path. An abrupt halt left her teetering in her stilettos. A strong, masculine arm wrapped around her waist. Lauren’s heart jumped.

“Careful.” His breath ruffled the hair near her cheek. “I’ve got you.”

People squeezed by to get to the door. She didn’t budge. The keyboardist’s clean, woodsy scent surrounded her as she leaned against hard chest muscle.

“Time to move. We’re about to get trampled.” He rested his hand on her back. Confidence and his long stride sliced through the crowd. They walked out and moved to the side of the door.

Too much space allowed cool night air to steal his warmth. Exhaust fumes from departing cars snatched away his appealing scent.

More people piled out of the club.

He turned his back to the door. Lights near the awning illuminated the clean-shaven lines of his face. “I’m Reid, by the way.”

Intense hazel eyes robbed her of speech. Her, lost for words? That never happened. “I’m Lauren.”

“Nice to meet you, Lauren. So, are you coming to the after-party?”

Across the parking lot, Ari begged and stamped her feet. Inches shorter than Celine, she resembled a child throwing a tantrum.

“My friend Celine is tired. She wants to go home.”

Reid stepped into her space. Close enough for warmth and deliciousness to return and kick up her heart rate. “What do you want?”

 To stay out of trouble.

After three failed relationships in five months, she was taking a break from men, dating, the whole shebang. “It isn’t about what I want.”

“It should be.”

“When we’re out together, if one of us doesn’t want to do something, we all take a pass.”

He flattened her hand to his chest. “You’re breaking my heart. I can’t believe fate brought you to me tonight just to take you away.”

REVIEW: Though I’m sure Reid’s Deliverance can be read as a stand-alone for many, it was not a good idea for me. I was confused after Reid phased and when he was talking about Dalir as the “ancient one” that could see the future. There were also allusions to past events that I couldn’t quite get a handle on. That was until I looked on Goodreads and found a very comprehensive review of Thanes Redemption. Then everything came together and made sense. This made the read much more enjoyable. I liked how the characters were well developed and how Lauren’s daddy issues caused real issues concerning how she felt about men in general. I liked how Reid never gives up, even when he initially lets his feelings of insecurity get the best of him.

I liked how the characters were well developed and how Laurens Daddy issues caused real issues concerning how she felt about men in general. I liked how Reid never gives up, even when he initially lets his feelings of insecurity get the best of him.

I wasn’t a fan of Lauren’s wishy-washiness. I felt her ideas of what to look for in a man were unattainable and that she was prejudiced against someone that defends our country, even though I understood her reasons behind her actions. I thought she would have been more believable if she had a little more conflict about Reid instead of just going with her lustful feelings. I also felt like the ending was a bit rushed.

This book was a quick read and had a few steamy episodes and would be a good read for those that enjoy Paranormal/Contemporary Romance with a little Sci-Fi thrown in.

 Thane's Redemption.jpg

The one night she’ll want to remember, she’ll be forced to forget.

It’s been almost a year since Celine’s fiancé’s death and she’s still struggling to move on. But when she meets Thane, the super hot lead singer of Thane’s Redemption, she finds her desire reawakening, and her heart opening. Soon one kiss leads them straight into a night of heated passion…

Thane’s unexpected connection with Celine only leaves him wanting more of her—but his life makes it impossible. For Thane’s Redemption is just a cover for a deeper secret: A former Army Ranger presumed dead, Thane is really a time-traveling, covert operative charged with saving the world from disaster. Each jump through time forces those around him to forget he ever existed—and Celine would be no exception. But can time work in their favor to give them a second chance at love? Or will a choice Thane makes in the future put Celine in mortal danger?…
