Compromised (Alpha Ops Book 5)

Compromised by Emmy Curtis

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

If you are afraid to read this because you haven’t read the rest of the series, then worry no more! This is a stand-alone that flows seamlessly from the first page until the last. So many times I find the romantic/romantic suspense genre to be lacking in content. You get a lot of smexy scenes but no real content. “Compromised” surprised me because I felt for Sadie and Simon. They both had realistic characterization and I could feel the anger and pain from each. Of course, being this genre, there were a few eye rolling worthy scenes of “I love you” ‘I hate you” (as I think of beating off to the smell of your pillow) type moments, but it wasn’t distracting enough to make me want to put it down. I actually read the whole thing in a few hours.
I really like the author’s writing style. I could tell it wasn’t just words falling out of her head. She had to have had experience with military or put at least a little effort in the research because her facts were spot on.
As much as I loved Sadie and Simon, I found Garret to be my favorite character. He was so funny but he had Simon’s back from the moment he set foot on the ground.
The only real drawback is I was left wondering what happened to Simon’s team. I’m hoping that will be addressed in the net installment. Speaking of the next installment… My main man Malone Garret will be starring in Risk of Exposure (Alpha Ops #6) set to release May 6, 2016. I, for one, can’t wait.
Thank you @EmmyCurtis19 and Barclay Publicity for this review opportunity! Though I received a free copy, it in no way affected the outcome of my review!

REVIEWS…FRIEND OR FOE?

J.A. Kerr

REVIEWFor most authors reviews are a critical issue but I am beginning to question the reasoning behind a one-star review. I’ve often bought a purchase, and used my own judgment without help from reviews, to select and buy. In fairness, it’s usually clothes and a spur of the moment purchase. We shop for our clothes instore as well as online but this does not seem to follow for books. There are big price discrepancies.

Amazon offers value for money but only online. Readers, unable to lift a book for themselves, are reassured by book reviews. Why? We put our trust in other people choices but as they say, “one man’s meat, is another man’s poison.” Reviews are a guideline towards the quality of the book attesting to professional editing, good plot etc, etc. We must decide if  the story is  one we will enjoy.

Walking into a bookstore, I don’t automatically…

17-year old November Lonergan spent her whole life feeling like an outsider, like she was different. She was right. She is a reaper like her mother; like her two cousins, Kai and Tristin. The supernatural world believes they are part of a prophecy to save them from an evil power known as the Grove. Ember just wants to survive high school and fix the fallout from bringing back Quinn. And there is a lot of fallout. Mace and Allister are missing, her uncle Alex is dead and Quinn seems to disappear a little more every day.

Now, a group of demonic hunters known as the Legionaries has resurfaced, threatening the reapers and anybody who stands with them. They are making good on their threats too; killing those closest to the pack and almost exposing the supernatural world to the humans in the process. Their only hope of defeating the Legionaries involves trusting a stranger to perform a dangerous spell to advance Ember and her cousin’s powers. But Ember has a secret; a secret she can’t tell the pack. When Mace left, so did her magic and without it all of their planning means nothing.

An attack on pack allies leaves Donovan missing along with a mysterious girl named Evangeline who may play a bigger part in this than any of them realize. As the Legionaries are closing in, the pack must trust their enemies, enter hostile territories, and play a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the psychopath holding Mace. Their entire plan lynches on rescuing Mace and restoring Ember’s magic, but rescuing Mace could mean losing one member of the group in his place…possibly forever.

Thrust into a world of men, can a timid girl find bravery as the first female Death?
Thirteen-year-old Suzie Sarnio always believed the Grim Reaper was a fairy tale image of a skeleton with a scythe. Now, forced to enter the College of Deaths, she finds herself training to bring souls from the Living World to the Hereafter. The task is demanding enough, but as the only female in the all-male College, she quickly becomes a target. Attacked by both classmates and strangers, Suzie is alone in a world where even her teachers want her to fail.

As her year progresses, Suzie suspects her presence isn’t an accident. She uncovers a plot to overthrow the World of Deaths. Now she must also discover the reason she’s been brought there: the first female Death in a million years.

Praise for School of Deaths:

“If you like Harry Potter, you’ll love this!” – Sasha Alsberg, A Book Utopia

“Wonderful! Addictive! Two thumbs up! The plot itself was beyond intriguing. It definitely took me for a spin. I wasn’t expecting the story to take me where it did, and it definitely kept me guessing all the way toward the end. The author did a wonderful job at keeping me both entertained and fascinated by the world he created. Would recommend School of Deaths to YA lovers everywhere.” – Kristy Centeno, author of The Keeper Witches series and the Secrets of the Moon series.

“The characters are well developed, the story is complex and non-stop. Lots of surprises along the way. A dash of romance, lots of intrigue, mystery, and fantasy. This was a book I didn’t want to end.” – Montzalee Wittman

“Loved this book! Suzie is a wonderfully well written and in depth main character. I understood her struggle and appreciated her growth throughout the book.” – Ann Andrews

“Not just a book for young adults, but an imaginative read for everyone who likes something a little bit different. 5 Stars!” – Reader’s Favorite
